It was a pleasure to have known David. Not alone was he a cycling inspiration but a gentleman at all times. Rest in peace.

Well Davy,

You certainly grabbed the headlines again with your departure.
I think that would have brought a smile to your face.
We shared many a good time together, shared an apt for a while and I have so many memories of you, all good.
On the nite we heard the news, Mikey Mc, Frankie Lee and myself met up and had a great chat about you.
You will be sorely missed, hard to believe you are gone.
My daughter Niamh also spoke very warmly of you.
I remember the time when you were starting out in the building, you had no car, no tools but infinite ideas.
I was driving an old Vauxhall Cavalier and we were like Only Fools and Horses with the cement mixer hanging out of the back.
Lots more stories like that.
My condolences to Brendan your father, and your brothers, Ger,Brian and Brendan.
Till we meet again, Trapper !

I never knew David personally but living in Dublin during his successful period it was always a pleasure to see a fellow Limerickman in the cycling results section of the papers. His succes were an inspiration to me at the time as a budding junior racer. The 'Sporting Limerick' brand cam after David's time at the top level but he was the definition of it as the other comments above show. I'll be wearing my early '90s Limerick CC jersey in his honour this week. My sympathies to all his family and friends.

An abiding memory of Dave that I have was on a training ride one January day in 1992. There were about twenty-five riders in the group. We were on the N7 Dublin road heading towards Nenagh. After passing Birdhill there is a long drag (At Buckley’s Nursery). I was beside Dave at the front, the pace was high, very high! I could barely make conversation with him. Trying to breathe was more of a priority.
Then he very casually put his hand in his pocket and took out an apple and started eating it. Only David Hourigan could do that at 20mph – going uphill! I doubt if the apple was for energy, he was probably flossing his teeth.
There are many stories like that, encapsulating the prowess of the man.
It was a pleasure to have known a cyclist of such talent.
I extend my sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace.

Just now, Hubby 'Gaybo' is away doing Service on the FBD Insurance Ras, and received this very sad news with great shock. On behalf of all of our family, I extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. We have really brilliant memories of David staying here in Stamullen with us and Siobhan trying to keep him fed with giant dinners as he always had a massive appetite and loved his food. He was fun too!
We are all very sad with his untimely passing. May he rest in peace. We won't forget you, David.
