David Hourigan RIP
Requiem Mass at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, Ennis Road, on Saturday, June 19th, at 11am. Burial afterwards in Ballycannon Cemetery, Meelick.
An abiding memory of Dave that I have was on a training ride one January day in 1992. There were about twenty-five riders in the group. We were on the N7 Dublin road heading towards Nenagh. After passing Birdhill there is a long drag (At Buckley’s Nursery). I was beside Dave at the front, the pace was high, very high! I could barely make conversation with him. Trying to breathe was more of a priority.
Then he very casually put his hand in his pocket and took out an apple and started eating it. Only David Hourigan could do that at 20mph – going uphill! I doubt if the apple was for energy, he was probably flossing his teeth.
There are many stories like that, encapsulating the prowess of the man.
It was a pleasure to have known a cyclist of such talent.
I extend my sympathy to his family. May he rest in peace.

Will be missed Dave.
what sad news ,what a talent i met him a few years ago when i was home .will be greatly missed.rip
very sad news. david was one of limericks best ever cyclists. God be with you david.
Trained with him and the Limerick lads while at UL 1996-2000. Sound, tough and impressive…
It is with great sadness that I opened the paper today and saw a photo and thought I know that face from somewhere.
The headline hit me hard when i read it.
I remember fondly my time in Limerick, a great town, great people and a great club.
My lasting memory of David was on the Conor Pass during the Earl of Desmond stage race in 1988. David had permission to ride it as a junior. On the upper third of the climb David came up to me asking me if I was ok. I bit my lip and said yea, you go on. he then sailed on as if on a flat road!!!
To his family, his friends and to all that knew David through the club my heartfelt sympathy.
May he rest in Peace
David was my first cousin a really nice fellow he will be greatly missed rest in peace Dave x x
David was a great talent. May he rest in peace.
Shocking news, I had the distinct pleasure of racing with, trainng with and knowing Dave, he was an inspirationto me and many others…RIP Dave
I remember the first day David came out with the Limerick cycling club – it was a winter league race and of course, he almost won. I shared a room with him during the ‘88 Junior Tour when we were sponsored by Burgerland – he won a stage and almost the overall in ‘89….and his success at senior level is well documented….the only guy I know who could ride up Paddy’s hill in the big ring!!(Nissan Classic stage)
A really nice guy, a rare talent….such a sad way to end. Our thoughts are with his family.
For my dearest nephew David sadly missed by your auntie Josie and all the white family may you rest in piece x
What a terrible loss, Davy was a super fella with a big appetite for everything in life (especially the pasta).
We rode together in so many races and he always showed his talent, but more importantly, we always had a laugh, the best of craic would be had over roads in Ireland, Germany (the Hessan Stage Race), Austrailia, New Zealand, and other countries representing our country. Everybody on the team would eat their dinner one plate per man but Davy would have at least two!!
A fantasic bike rider, a loyal friend and Irish team mate, above all else a decent, sincere and genuine person.
Last time we met was in Bangkok, ran into Davy late one night at the markets where he was striking a deal on some dodgy watches to bring home and sell!! We were on honeymoon, and we sat together all night long talking and remembering the fun times we had together.
A lot of laughs and a few drinks later, and where had the time gone, the bars and everywhere else shut with the break of dawn! We had missed the last boat back across the river to the hotel, so we said good luck to Davy and got a taxi, with Davy heading the other way at about 5am or so!
We are so so so very sad and upset to hear this horrible news, it is really devastating, what a loss to the Irish cycling community, his family, friends and anybody who knew Davy. We miss him already and are really upset at the news.
“Steady, steady now Trapper, take it easy!” says Davy whenever the pace would get up too high!
Till we meet up again Davy; Steady now Trapper, take it easy!
Paul Slane and Siobhan Howard Slane
I will miss you Davie,we had some battles all over the country,we saw much of the world together from Moscow as juniors to Australia as first year seniors and beyond, the only person I feared on the start line until we became team mates and shared some great victories together. As you said to me in Essex and I said to you in the manx international “YOUR A GOD TRAPPER” I will never forget my best friend in cycling Davie Hourigan RIP.Our thoughts are with family and friends.
Dave was a good friend, I will remember him fondly always x Miss you Dave x x

I’ll never forget the craic that David and his little niece had playing a money game which she fleeced him in last yr just before he left for thailand, they had so much fun she still goes on about it, i cant believe whats after happening, it’s so sad. his brother Brian and myself just keep thinking of the good times they had together, i can still see the 2 of them in my kitchen havin a good ‘ol’ skit about all the scamming they used to do together. he’s missed terrible by us all. lot’s of love dave from linda…….R.I.P…..
I remember Dave starting out as a cyclist and his huge talent was immediately obvious. His sucess in the Isle of Man was phenominal. He had a great Nissan Classic mixing it with the best. Mike Cusack and I witnessed a super ride by him in the National Championship after a bad wheel change from the “neutral” service car at the 80 mile mark. Dave was mad, he chased at 30mph on undulating roads, it was an awesome performance. Three guys in the break got some shock when they realised he was only a few hundred yards behind at the finish. If only the race was a few miles longer there’s no doubt he’d have zapped the lot.
My sincere sympathies to Dave’s greatest supporter, Bendan his Dad
Wow!! what comments….. ‘well Trapper, what d’ya think????’ steady on…. it looks you were a GOD afterall!! blown everyone away …once again… you’ve messed up a few heads, (but what’s new?)…
I am still waiting for mail from you, to discuss how much money we gona make from dodgy cosmetics, fake silk fabrics and immitation designer clothing… you were in great form last week inviting me over, this was not your time!!! we had unfinished construction deals to close… they were in the bag buddy!!
Always needed to talk with me urgently eh?? (and for some reason it was necessary to always be urgently over a pint)
‘this is perfect for you’ you’d say, never missing a business opportunity, however your paperwork organisation skills had a lot to be desired, most of the time it was used to sit on in your jeep to avoid the dried up cement plaster, day before sandwiches and spilled coffee from destroying my suits…. what always concerned me was your talent to eat a sandwich, talk on the phone, laugh and drive at the same time, apart from the fact the majority of the sandwich remained on your face, you never failed to get your message and your idea across or get to where you were going!!
I remember when i had nothing to wear after work to head out for after work drinks with you, instead of making the 7 mile drive home to change, you’d say ‘no problem, Davie’ll fix it’, pulling out an enormous black sack of skimpy mock D&G tops and t shirts that you physically carried all the way home from Thailand under your arm, still in their plastic, as you tore them open, i didn’t only have to wear one, because i had no choice, but i had to get the all clear on which one you wanted me to wear…. you had great taste, but why why why did it always have to be the tightest one????…
Thanks for minding me buddy, you always looked after me, as i write this i am listening to David Bowie, Space Oddity, your fav, he was a God too.
You are a loss to me, your friends, your team mates, your family, whom you spoke of highly like a true son and leader, God damn it you’re a loss to this world, you promised your Dad you’d make the Hourigan name a household name, and i don’t mean now, YOU HAD DONE THAT YEARS AGO CHAMP!!
Dave, my adviser, partner, helper, companion and friend, you picked me up when i felt down, you advised me when i was confused, our chats, our excursions, our comfortable silence, our hugs, our tears, your loyalty, you stole my heart once, and part of it will always be yours… I MISS U MASSIVELY, faaaar more than 300 blocks a day….. i hope Dave you are still smiling, what you undoubtedly did best!!!
your friend always
Erin x x x
I have known Dave since 2002 and I am deeply shocked hearing this sad sad news. I will always rem the gud times and believe there were many, also his sayings again many of them, but the one I rem most was “top drawer”..
Rest in peace Dave xx ul be greatly missed..
My deepest sympathy go to his family and many friends..
Just now, Hubby ‘Gaybo’ is away doing Service on the FBD Insurance Ras, and received this very sad news with great shock. On behalf of all of our family, I extend our deepest sympathy to his family and friends. We have really brilliant memories of David staying here in Stamullen with us and Siobhan trying to keep him fed with giant dinners as he always had a massive appetite and loved his food. He was fun too!
We are all very sad with his untimely passing. May he rest in peace. We won’t forget you, David.
Kay, Gaybo & family.

I never knew David personally but living in Dublin during his successful period it was always a pleasure to see a fellow Limerickman in the cycling results section of the papers. His succes were an inspiration to me at the time as a budding junior racer. The ‘Sporting Limerick’ brand cam after David’s time at the top level but he was the definition of it as the other comments above show. I’ll be wearing my early ’90s Limerick CC jersey in his honour this week. My sympathies to all his family and friends.
Well Davy,
You certainly grabbed the headlines again with your departure.
I think that would have brought a smile to your face.
We shared many a good time together, shared an apt for a while and I have so many memories of you, all good.
On the nite we heard the news, Mikey Mc, Frankie Lee and myself met up and had a great chat about you.
You will be sorely missed, hard to believe you are gone.
My daughter Niamh also spoke very warmly of you.
I remember the time when you were starting out in the building, you had no car, no tools but infinite ideas.
I was driving an old Vauxhall Cavalier and we were like Only Fools and Horses with the cement mixer hanging out of the back.
Lots more stories like that.
My condolences to Brendan your father, and your brothers, Ger,Brian and Brendan.
Till we meet again, Trapper !
Ter Bussoli.
David was a great cyclist and a great guy.Rest in peace.
It was a pleasure to have known David. Not alone was he a cycling inspiration but a gentleman at all times. Rest in peace.
