The Limerick County 2012 Road Race Champs were run in Dromcollogher on Thursday 12th July, and hosted by Liam Collins of Cycling Pursuits. There were Junior, A4, A3 and A2 riders who were all started together. Limerick CC were represented on the night by Pat McSweeney, Colm Dillon and David Bourke.
It was a cold wet evening and the race had to be shortened from 8 to 5 laps of what was an almost flat circuit. There was an attack as early as the 2nd lap which was ultimately reeled in. Another attack came from a C4SC rider but the one that stuck came coming onto the 4th lap by Simon Ryan of Visit Nenagh DMG. Once a 20 second gap opened the chasing peleton was now in two parts with David Bourke and Colm Dillon sitting comfortably at the front of the first group, and Pat McSweeney chasing hard in the group behind who were trying to re-establish contact. Both Bourke and Dillon survived a crash on the 4th lap, before the race settled down for the approach to the finish line for the final time.
As the race came through the main street of Drom for the last time, a long sprint was the order of the day. The Tuesday evening training league seemed to be paying off as Bourke came off a wheel to come 3rd in the bunch gallop, coming 4th overall, and 1st A4, with Colm Dillon finishing just behind him placing himself as 3rd A3. Pat McSweeney soon led in the chasing group.
