In 2011 and 2012 the weather Gods shone on Ballymore and Cobh on Great Island in Co Cork for the advent of the Leahy Cup. You take the memories and pictures in your mind and think how it will be for this year….cue the record scratch! Like Coachford 3 weeks ago the rain was ceaseless, and the Gods for their part seemingly having a laugh. This circuit is tricky to say the least with rolling bumps and hollows, twists and turns, all of which stretches out on a 10km circuit of largely narrow and dead road. There is a punchy little hill at the end, and then on the finishing lap there is a different hill that sets up a Mur de Huy type finish that will separate any remaining wheat from the chaff.
Congrats to one and all of the Limerick CC contingent who safely negotiated the conditions and in so doing brought a hatful of results back to Limerick:
U14 Race, 1st Girl – Laura Cooke, 1st U13 Evan O’Donnell
U16 race – Sean Yelverton 2nd
A3/Junior Race – Stephen Shanahan 2nd
Well done also to Anthony Gahan, lone Limerick CC contender in Donamon CC’s race in Roscommon. Anthony was busy off the front in many attacks looking for the one that would stick, but unfortunately got tangled in a crash 8km from the line. Thankfully he is fine and was reportedly pleased with the unexpected opportunity of an 8km threshold session.
See you all on Tuesday evening for more of the race training which seems to be helping at least in yielding such a strong string of results for the club at so many different levels since seasons’s start.
